DIYMA freshman Join Date: Oct 2012 Location: Mid-Michigan Posts: 17 Thanks: 3 Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts	You get a new car and the sound sytem sounds rich and full at low volumes and high volume levels but then you inevitabley reach a certain point of where distortion begins to happen. My question is, if I like the sound of the system how can I get more volume out of it but maintain the quality? For example: audio shops always seem to advise a new HU. Without fail, evertime I put in a non OEM HU in a car then it sounds completely different then the factory sound but yes, somewhat louder volume is acheived before distortin kicks in. By competely different I mean that music seems flat at low volume levels and only a little bit richer and fuller at higher volume levels But not even close to what the OEM sounded like. So I go back to the audio shop and the always seem to advise that "oh..those factory speakers can't handle the power of that HU so you need better speakers." Seems logical, I think. So boom, now I put in new speakers. You guessed it, the sound now is 100% different from what I start with when I had the OEM unit in there. Go back to audio shop, now you need amp/sub and so it goes on and on. Many $$$ later and yes I got a louder/cleaner sounding system at the same volume levels where the OEM system would distort but the sound never compares to the great sounding OEM system. Can anyone explain why this is? Isn't there a way to just keep the OEM sound but get it louder and cleaner at than where it would currently begin to distort? If anyone has a great solution to this that works I might have to just ship some beer money cuz this is just what I consider to be about every persons issue until they get really serious about either SQ or SPL. Most of us are happy with the stock sound but just want to be able to turn the volume dial to 11 with it still being distortion free. Yes indeed that is a Spinal Tap reference. They also do it so that for the average person, the stereo sounds good at the volume they are listening to in the lot. Also you have to understand that over time, our hearing becomes accustomed to the factory sound, so we turn it up to retrieve hat lost feeling lol. If you take not nowadays manufacturers are making it about the sound system replication. They're selling based upon the numberes ie, 9 speakers, 560 watt sound system. When you as an average consumer hear those numbers, you just know hat you've reached nirvana. Another way to sort of increase our sound without adding components is to lower the noise level in your vehicle. You can do this by sound deadening, properly inflated tires, and focusing more of the sound to your front, and less to the rear.

Most after markets recommend the tweeter be no farther than 18 inches away or it won't sound right...would it be out of phase? They use to just throw the crap in there with no special focus at all. Literally crap, 4 door stops and a Delco paper weight. That has changed tremendously really starting early to mid 90's!! Many experts, audio engineers and 3rd party company's have been hired to design and implement systems into the vehicles today. A lot more planning and focus has gone into the SQ. While not perfect for the most part, but great leaps and strides while still maintaining strict budgets.

I think your question isn't easily answered without considering what's actually causing the distortion. Headunit vs. speakers. Your car make and model might help. 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 (basic no frills system). How do you find out which distorts first, the speakers or the HU? I would not be able to tell with my hearing, unless there was some trick and then I would know what to listen for...but even then who knows.
