Boys Soccer: Brunswick boys rout Washington

CATONSVILLE -- Leaving two defenders just beyond midfield to mark Washington forward Kyle Simpkins, Brunswick's boys soccer team infiltrated the attacking third from the opening touch of Saturday's Class 1A championship game, launching shot after shot in the direction of Jaguars goalkeeper Ryan Fries.

While Fries and the Jaguars defense held tough against Brunswick through the first 35 minutes, the Railroaders finally broke through on a Drew Demich goal.

And they didn't stop there.

Led by Demich -- Brunswick's all-time leading goal scorer -- the Railroaders scored six second-half goals Saturday afternoon to capture the school's second state championship in a 7-2 victory over Washington at UMBC.

Demich capped his high school career in style as he finished with four goals, three of which came in a span of 3:37 early in the second half that pushed the lead to 5-0. Demich pushed his record-setting goal output to 86 following Saturday's performance.

"The first half, we created chances, it just wasn't happening for us and we stayed patient," Brunswick coach Kenny Putnam said. "We got our rewards in the second half. Washington didn't quit. They're a really good team and we had a lot of respect for them coming in."

After the trophy presentation, Putnam brought the plaque over to the sidelines, where he held it above his head in front of the Railroaders student section. The emotional coach let loose a celebratory scream and a giant fist pump before leaving the field. ----

Brunswick (17-2-1) has been on the verge of a championship over the last few years. When members of the current senior class were freshmen in 2009, the Railroaders fell in the state semifinal. A year later, the Railroaders fell in the state final to Mountain Ridge.

"We've been knocking on the door for a while," Demich said. "Back in 2010, it didn't feel as well as it does today. It's awesome to finally get it after four years."

In the 18th minute, Demich had an opportunity to put Brunswick on the board as he earned a penalty kick following a handball in the box. But Demich's shot was blocked by Fries, giving the Jaguars an opportunity to take control of the game.

"I wanted to score it, but that's fine," Demich said. "I got four more, so I felt a little better after that."

Demich gave the Railroaders a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, knocking home a shot initially saved by Fries that caromed back to Brunswick's red-headed forward.

Brandon Feuerherd scored Brunswick's second goal just 90 seconds into the second half off a cross from Zach Hossler.

"Once we scored, we opened up the floodgates and we knew we could score a bunch of goals," Feuerherd said.

"We made a couple of adjustments at halftime," Putnam said. "We asked them to be just a little more patient, but once we got the second it was a big sigh of relief and the goals kept coming."

With his comments, Feuerherd also drew the most laughs during the postgame press conference.

"This might be the most I've ever heard Brandon talk," Demich said of his freshman teammate as Putnam laughed in agreement.

Demich continued his scoring barrage with two nearly identical goals, starting in the 48th minute. From about 25 yards, Demich curled toward the box, using a number of ball fakes before placing a pair of shots to the lower left corner.

Demich's final goal, which came in the 51st minute, started from outside the box along the right sideline before he dribbled past a pair of Jaguars defenders to find the back of the net again. --

Charged with marking Simpkins was Anthony Lukens, who moved back to defense when Austin Sample was lost for the year with an injury. Lukens did an outstanding job of limiting the touches and frustrating the Jaguars senior.

"To win a championship, you have to have players step up in places they don't normally play," Putnam said. "Anthony came to me and said, 'Coach, I can do it,' and I said, 'The job is yours.'"

Washington (12-5) tallied two late goals by Simpkins, who scored his 34th and 35th goals of the year to break up the shutout, giving him 101 for his career.

"We keyed on their top striker and he gave us a lot of problems today. In the end, he probably got two that he deserved," Putnam said.

JT Bergman and Costas Beauclair added Brunswick's final goals. Ty Foltz and Cooper Siegal combined to make three saves in goal for the Roaders, who ended their season on a seven-game winning streak.
