Famous Playwrights And TV Counterparts: If Oscar Wilde Wrote 'Mad Men,' And Other Pairings (SLIDESHOW)

You know it's real when people keep writing eulogies for it: we're in a golden age of TV, everyone. Today's scripted shows are stylish, smart and occasionally revolutionary, a runoff effect from structural and aesthetic game-changers like "Louie," "Mad Men," and yes, "The Sopranos." We at HuffPost Culture can't shake the thought that the medium has become a lot like what theater has historically been -- a destination for a range of people looking to be entertained without fail.

Then there's playwright David Adjmi's "3C," in which "Three's Company" is re-imagined as if Anton Chekhov wrote it. Taken with the oddness of Adjmi's couple, we realized how many of today's shows actually hit heights that a Russian literary genius might not mind substitute navigating for a bit. A show like "The Wire," for instance, might not yield as rich a thought experiment as Adjmi's "3C," but it has playwright takeover written all over it. Inspired by the possibilities, we put together our own list of shows we'd love to see scripted by a specific great. Let us know what you think of our pairings in the comments, and don't hesitate to tell us your own.

  • Oscar Wilde/Mad Men

The glamour, the banter, the covert homosexuality -- there's a lot in common between AMC's prettiest show and the works of Oscar Wilde, a playwright who liked pretty things. Wilde was famously an advocate of aestheticism, inscribing his seminal novel "The Portrait Of Dorian Grey" with the statement: "All art is quite useless," <a href="http://www.bu.edu/writingprogram/journal/past-issues/issue-1/duggan/" target="_hplink">a dramatic way of saying</a> that what's compelling to look at needn't serve any useful purpose. If that isn't a defense of the advertising industry, we don't know what is. Then there's the overt link: Don Draper fled his hometown of Bunbury for a new life, a <a href="http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/feb/24/mad-men-account/?pagination=false" target="_hplink">nod to the code word</a> Wilde's male leads coin in "The Important Of Being Earnest" to reference their duplicity.

  • Wendy Wasserstein/Girls

Read the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/31/theater/31wasserstein.html?_r=2" target="_hplink"><em>New York Times</em> obituary for Wendy Wasserstein</a> -- a playwright born to wealthy parents in Brooklyn -- and just try not to think of that other child of privilege from the Big Apple, Lena Dunham. From the article's headline ("Her Plays Spoke To A Generation") to the description of Wasserstein's heroines ("intelligent and successful but also riddled with self-doubt"), it all sounds like one of those <a href="http://nymag.com/arts/tv/features/girls-lena-dunham-2012-4/" target="_hplink">early bright-eyed "Girls" paeans</a>. Ok, Dunham's "Girls" persona isn't exactly successful yet, but considering how <a href="http://www.npr.org/2012/05/07/152183865/lena-dunham-addresses-criticism-aimed-at-girls" target="_hplink">close to home the show's sourcing starts</a> we're pretty sure it'll happen for Hannah soon.

  • Mary Chase/Wilfred

Mary Chase wrote "Harvey," a Pultizer-winning play (turned 1950 Jimmy Stewart film) about an eccentric man whose best friend is a six foot tall imaginary bunny. In FX's "Wilfred," Elijah Wood plays a depressive who can't shake the vision that his neighbor's dog is an Australian dude in a dog suit. This playwright/TV connection may be only fur-deep, but you can't deny it.

  • Tom Stoppard/Arrested Development

A self-described "<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/johntusainterview/stoppard_transcript.shtml" target="_hplink">language nerd</a>," Czech-born British playwright Tom Stoppard is known for his dense and clever thought experiments, exemplified in his career-making recast of two minor "Hamlet" characters as leads in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." We'd have no trouble imagining him penning the fast-paced wordplay of "Arrested Development," a show that revels in knotty, knotty plots (absurdist Charlize Theron era strikes us as just right).

  • Shakespeare/Modern Family

We know it's inviting criticism to pair Shakespeare with any modern creation, except maybe the only show people get really poetic about, "The Wire." But hear us out: Shakespeare was one of the most popular entertainers of his time. "Modern Family" sets the bar for widely appealing fare these days, and while it's got nothing on a Shakespearean tragedy, its multi-predicament-into-happy-ending formula makes it ABC's half-hour weekly update of "A Comedy Of Errors."

  • Tennessee Williams/Six Feet Under

Tennessee Williams loved his dysfunctional families -- take the household in "The Glass Menagerie," where the places of honor are reserved for an absentee father and a collection of glass figurines. Meanwhile, HBO's long-running series "Six Feet Under" is nothing if not proof that family dysfunction makes for great TV. We have no doubt Williams' Southern gothic tastes would gel with the show's funeral home backdrop, except maybe he'd move the Fishers down a few states.

Where's that coin? 15 gymnasts vying for 5 spots

(AP) ? Picking their Olympic teams with a coin flip probably sounds good to the gymnastics folks right about now.

With enough depth on both the men's and women's sides that each could send two five-person teams to London, the selection committees have their work cut out for them after this week's Olympic trials. There's one ? count it, one ? guaranteed spot available, with the remaining nine gymnasts chosen based on what combination gives the Americans the best chance for medals, preferably gold, in the team finals.

"It's tough," Jonathan Horton, who led the Americans to a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics, said Wednesday. "You know there are going to be three or four guys who belong on the team that don't make it."

The men's trials begin Thursday and the women start Friday. The top two men, using combined scores from nationals and Olympic trials, could lock up spots, but only if they also finish in the top three of the six events. Otherwise, two gymnasts will be named Saturday night and the remaining three will be added Sunday. The winner of the women's all-around competition gets that lone guaranteed spot and, for the first time since 2000, the rest of the team will be determined after the competition ends Sunday.

Got all that?

"I don't think people realize how many years and years of hard work it's been, I don't care if you're 16 or 22," Olympic champion Nastia Liukin said. "Five out of 15 girls' dreams will come true, and the other 10 are probably going to be devastated."

Unlike track or swimming, the scoring format makes it impossible to pick a gymnastics team simply based on who finishes first, second, third, fourth and fifth.

In qualifying, four gymnasts compete on each event and the lowest score is dropped. For team finals, however, the format switches to the unforgiving three-up, three-count, with three gymnasts competing on each event and all three scores counting. That means teams have to be built to put up monster numbers in team finals, yet still have the versatility and balance to get through qualifying ? not to mention withstanding last-minute injuries.

And that means the selection committees will be doing the equivalent of an Olympic jigsaw over these next few days, trying to figure out what pieces fit best where.

"Usually, when you select a team, it comes down to that last spot," said Martha Karolyi, the women's national team coordinator.

That sure appears to be the case here.

Orozco, world parallel bars champion Danell Leyva and Horton, a two-time medalist in Beijing, are considered virtual locks. That leaves two spots, and Sam Mikulak sure helped his cause by finishing third at the U.S. championships two weeks ago. Chris Brooks, Jake Dalton and Steve Legendre are sitting squarely on the bubble.

Dalton said he was already figuring out where ? and how ? he could fit at the world championships last fall. His best events are floor and vault, but he noticed the U.S. men needed some help on still rings.

"You think who's good on what events," Dalton said. "I knew I needed to get stronger on still rings."

For the women's team, reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman can probably start packing for London. Douglas finished a mere 0.2 points behind Wieber at nationals and also has a massive score on uneven bars, the weak spot for the Americans. Raisman was the bronze medalist on floor exercise at last year's world championships, and is as rock steady as they come.

Do the math, and that leaves two spots ? and at least a half-dozen candidates for them. There's Liukin and Beijing teammates Alicia Sacramone and Bridget Sloan. There's McKayla Maroney, who added a gold medal on vault to the one the Americans won in the team competition at last year's worlds, and Rebecca Bross, who won six medals at the 2009 and 2010 world championships.

And then there are a slew of up-and-comers, including Kyla Ross, Elizabeth Price and Sarah Finnegan.

"I feel so sorry for the selection committee because it's going to be a hard decision," Sacramone said. "It's going to be hard for them to choose."

Or maybe not.

Karolyi said she has an "ideal team" in her mind, and it hasn't really changed in the last two months. Of course, there are alternatives in case something happens to this one. Or to that one. Or ? well, you get the idea.

There are times, Bross admits, that she's a little envious of the swimmers and the sprinters. Whether they make the Olympic team is up to them, and only them. Beat everyone else, and you're in.

But really, she and the other gymnasts wouldn't have it any other way. After all, the goal is to win medals, and no one's been better at that over the last two Olympics than the Americans. The U.S. men and women both won team medals in Athens and Beijing, something no other country can say.

"For us to go out and do the best for our country," she said, "it's the way it has to be."

Is it ethical to sell ?Hoarders? merchandise? | The Business Ethics Blog

? If we can?t trust universities, what hope can we have? | Home

By Lauren | June 27, 2012

Every once in a while, I?ll come across a product that strikes me as so utterly incongruous that I have to wonder what its producer could possibly have been thinking. Up until now, my favorite example has been magazines that primarily target women consumers. You know the sort - every issue features a new weight loss program, followed a few pages back by recipes for extravagant desserts or sugary cocktails guaranteed to blow the featured diet to smithereens. Seriously, were the departmental editors even at the same table when the issues were being laid out?

Yesterday, though, I stumbled across something that, by comparison, makes those magazines look like models of consistency. While poking around the A&E cable network?s website, I came to the page for ?Hoarders,? a show about people who compulsively stuff their homes with, well, stuff. At the top of the page I noticed a ?Shop? button and, bemused, clicked it. Up came no fewer than two dozen products associated with the show, including DVDs, books and t-shirts. It?s my understanding that hoarding is a serious mental and emotional illness, not just an interesting personal quirk. So why, oh why, would anyone want to feed the sickness by selling still more stuff associated with it?

It troubles me tremendously that cable television is becoming the modern equivalent of the 19th Century?s carnival sideshows. Flip through enough channels and you can find almost any kind of human misery packaged into a tidy one-hour reality show. It?s bad enough to turn hoarding into entertainment, still worse to use it as a platform for cheesy merchandising. Come on, A&E! Certainly you can do better.

European plan tries to convince Germany to do more

(AP) ? Top European officials have called on countries that use the euro to surrender more control over their national budgets, a move apparently aimed at easing Germany's fears of sharing debt burdens with struggling governments like Spain or Italy.

The plan is meant to be a grand vision to save the euro currency from financial disaster and to set up negotiations between leaders at a key European Union summit on Thursday.

Germany, Europe's biggest and strongest economy, is increasingly isolated in its refusal to quickly adopt measures such as jointly issued eurobonds, which would see it take on some of the debt risk of financially weak countries. Some experts say such debt-sharing is what Europe needs to end its crisis as it would help defuse the prospect of unaffordable bailouts for Spain or Italy.

But Germany is worried that such debt-sharing would tempt financially weak countries to spend irresponsibly once again and not reform their economies. Reassuring Berlin that governments would face tough oversight of their budgets would be key to easing Germany's resistance to debt-sharing.

"What is at stake is...the overall confidence in the euro area, and indeed in our commitment to the European project," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told reporters in Brussels. "For a genuine economic and monetary union to be established, I think we need a banking union, a fiscal union, and further steps toward a political union."

The plan was was drawn up by the "gang of four" top European officials: Barroso along with Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Eurogroup President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

It is doubtful whether eurozone governments will be willing to cede control over their budgets and whether citizens of European countries would accept the idea even if their leaders sign off on the idea.

The plan is to be debated by leaders from around Europe at a summit in Brussels Thursday and Friday that takes place against a backdrop of financial strains that are threatening to shatter the single currency.

On Monday, Spain requested financial help to recapitalize its banking industry, and yields on Spanish and Italian government bonds are rising toward levels that forced the governments of Greece, Portugal and Ireland to seek bailouts. But Spain and Italy are widely considered "too big to bail" ? even for Germany.

The plan proposes a "medium term" move towards eurobonds, as well as creating a banking union with a single authority. This authority, probably the ECB, would have the power to shut insolvent banks and insure deposits, with help from Europe's permanent bailout fund.

Though the plan is similar to those put forward by the International Monetary Fund and French President Francois Hollande, it was not embraced by Germany.

Chancellor Angela Merkel told a meeting of her party Tuesday afternoon that she would not accept full debt-sharing "as long as I live." A lawmaker who was present confirmed the remarks to the Associated Press, on condition of anonymity, but noted that she was referring to a full sharing of all national debts. Her office declined to comment.

Despite her strong words, Merkel has during the course of the European crisis accepted measures she had previously ruled out. She had opposed having a permanent rescue fund for Europe, for example, before then accepting it.

Even if rejecting eurobonds in all but the longest time frame is only a negotiating stance, it is clear that Merkel and her finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble oppose debt-sharing until countries have carried out reforms or credibly committed to do so, and the Eurozone has become better integrated than it is now. It is less clear how they believe the monetary union can survive its current stress to get to that point.

Merkel herself has said the solution to the crisis lies in "more Europe" in the form of better central controls.

Analysts were skeptical that the" gang of four" plan would lead to a concrete plan at the summit.

"Such proposals are just bureaucratic fine-tuning, rather than game-changing policies that will result in debt mutualisation and a banking Union," said analyst Neil MacKinnon of VTB Capital.

"As a result, the EU Summit will likely produce re-hashed plans for closer fiscal integration and a banking union but without any substantive detail of how it will actually be put into practice."

Though many European citizens will be opposed to the idea of surrendering control over their budgets, their governments all agreed to abide by a 3 percent deficit limit when they joined the single currency.

After multiple violations of the limit ? by Germany and France in the early 2000s, by a host of countries in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, and by Greece the whole time ? the 3 percent limit was reaffirmed in a new pact signed in January but not yet ratified. That pact also obliges eurozone countries to submit preliminary budgets to Brussels each year.

The latest plan published Tuesday was short on detail, but appeared to propose an even closer oversight of national budgets: "upper limits on the annual budget balance and on government debt levels of individual member states could be agreed in common," it said. Then, a "euro area level" authority could "require changes" to budgets of countries that stray.

At the end of the report, Van Rompuy volunteered to develop a "specific and time-bound roadmap for the achievement of the genuine economic and monetary union" by December.

&#39;Conservative&#39; vision for America ? ?10 Things You Would Miss About

While I am not a big fan of AHCA, it is a step towards providing health care to the most needy in America.

And the Republican plan?

?Another Republican Lie: GOP Admits They Have No Plan to Replace ObamaCare?
?Remember the Republican 2010 ?repeal and replace? Obamacares mantra? Well, kiss that goodbye. Their new mantra is ?repeal? and deal. They are swearing to repeal any parts left standing. No, seriously ? Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) explained, ?The goal is to repeal anything that is left standing.?

1) Access to health insurance for 30 million Americans and lower premiums.

2) The ability of businesses and individuals to purchase comprehensive coverage from a regulated marketplace.

3) Insurers? inability to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions. Beginning in 2014, insurers can no longer deny insurance to families or individuals with pre-existing conditions. Insurers are also prohibited from placing lifetime limits on the dollar value of coverage and rescinding insurers except in cases of fraud. Insurers are already prohibited from discriminating against children with pre-existing conditions.

4) Tax credits for small businesses that offer insurance.

5) Assistance for businesses that provide health benefits to early retirees. The law created a temporary reinsurance program for employers providing health insurance coverage to retirees over age 55 who are not eligible for Medicare, reimbursing employers or insurers for 80% of retiree claims.

6) Affordable health care for lower-income Americans. Obamacare extends Medicaid to individuals with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty line, guaranteeing that the nation? most vulnerable population has access to affordable, comprehensive coverage.

7) Investments in women?s health. Obamacare prohibits insurers from charging women substantially more than men and requires insurers to offer preventive services ? including contraception ? at no additional cost.

8) Young adults? ability to stay on their parents? health care plans. More than 3.1 million young people have already benefited from dependent coverage, which allows children up to age 26 to remain insured on their parents? plans.

9) Discounts for seniors on brand-name drugs. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are required to provide a 50% discount on prescriptions filled in the Medicare Part D coverage gap. Seniors have already saved $3.5 billion on prescription drug costs thanks to the Affordable Care Act provision.

10) Temporary coverage for the sickest Americans.

Tips For Successful Sales And Purchases In The Commercial Real ...

The decision to invest in commercial properties can carry significant tax benefits. Not only are there interest deductions, but also depreciation benefits to be aware of. Sometimes an investor will get a bit of money that is taxed even though it is not received. Try to understand this before you invest.

When you buy commercial real estate, look for opportunities to buy bigger. Taking care of more units does not cost much more and this will bring down the price of every individual unit.

You could edit or lead a newsletter regarding commercial properties in your community, or contribute regular content to social media. Do not fade away in the online world once you have completed a deal.

If you are taking out a commercial loan, you must pay for the appraisal yourself. The bank won?t let you make use of it later. Cover your bases and order the appraisal yourself.

When considering commercial real estate, you should think about the importance of honing relationships with private investors. For example, those in your network can give you the ?inside scoop? on properties, even those that are unlisted.

Size is highly important when you are searching for space for your growing business. If you don?t invest in commercial property that allows for growth, your business is going to be hunting for a new home again within a few short years.

Before you begin your search for the perfect commercial property, have a clear picture of your needs. Take the time to outline what your needs may be, from number of rooms to types of spaces needed. This should include the appropriate number of washrooms based on people present.

If you are under a lease for commercial real estate, be wary of standard lease forms. Sometimes, a long lease contains not only standard lease clauses, but extra agreements that the real estate company sneaked into the lease without discussing with you. If you read the whole document carefully, it is possible for you to avoid the pain that a lease can bring your way.

Consider online references that contain information written for both real estate novices and veterans. No one can ever honestly claim that they know too much.

You?ll have to pay more upfront for a commercial loan than for a residential loan, and there are other differences between the two types of loans. The most commonsense way to obtain commercial financing is by checking out different lending agencies and by asking around regarding the best types of investments.

It is essential that you become aware of any environmental issues associated with properties you are considering. One major problem is when your property has hazardous waste material issues. Once you own the property, any problems, hazardous waste related or otherwise, are yours to deal with.

You want to make sure the square footage is clearly available. There are two ways of measuring commercial real estate property. You can measure in usable square feet to determine the size of the area in which you will conduct business. You can also measure by total square feet for the complete size of the edifice, including areas that will not be in public use. It is a good idea to know measurements for each type of square footage. This will allow you to make decisions and speed up the process.

One of the biggest considerations in the process of attaining commercial property is to know the neighborhood of each and every prospective location. For example, if you?re offering high-priced goods or services, you might want to purchase property in wealthier areas where people are likely to be able to afford to buy from you. If your business services will do better in a poor neighborhood, buy property there!

You need to realize that every property has a lifetime. Don?t make the mistake of overlooking the fact that you will need to put a substantial amount of money into the property to keep it well-maintained. The building might need to have its roof replaced, or have the electrical wiring brought up to code. All building need this kind of care. However, some may need more upkeep than others. Plan for these repairs as they will happen in the future.

Focus on only one investment at the same time. Whether it?s an office building, land, or apartments, you should focus on just one kind of investment. Each kind of investment will requires a full time commitment. Master one type of investment at a time. Mediocre profits from several types of investments aren?t worth the effort, but major profits from one type of investment is.

Use of a digital camera is a simple and effective strategy. Be sure that the pictures show any current problems with or damage to the home.

When having your real estate inspected (as you should), always ask for the qualifications of the inspectors. This guideline is especially important when working with people who deal in pest management; these specific fields are often populated by practitioners who lack proper credentials. Ultimately, this can help you to bypass larger, more expensive problems.

Do your research so you know ahead of time if you will have issues with the environment surrounding your property. Should a problem with environmental waste ever occur, it is your obligation to properly clean your building and property. Are you considering purchasing a piece of real estate in an area prone to flooding? Think again! Call some agencies that assess the enviornment and find out what is up with the area your property is in.

There is a considerable amount of money to be made in commercial real estate. You have to invest a large down payment, sufficient time and enormous effort if your investment is to succeed. To make this happen, put the advice you just learned in the above article to use.

Texas Man Is Accused of Threatening Tennessee Mosque

Texas Man Is Accused of Threatening Tennessee Mosque
Kim Severson ("The New York Times," June 22, 2012)

A Texas man was indicted Thursday, accused of threatening to use violence to stop construction of a mosque that for two years has divided the community of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and has become a national barometer of anti-Muslim sentiment.

The United States Justice Department said the indictment was an aggressive stance in support of religious freedom and was intended as a warning to people who might resort to violence and other illegal activity to prevent the mosque or any other religious institution to operate.

?What we?re hoping is that this sends a very strong message to any would-be individual who would threaten a mosque or take an action that would result in an individual?s constitutional rights being violated,? United States Attorney Jerry Martin said Thursday afternoon.

A federal grand jury indicted Javier A. Correa, 24, of Corpus Christi, Tex., accusing him of violating the civil rights of members of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro in connection with a long, threatening message he is said to have left on the center?s phone last September.

Amid a slew of threats and profanity was this sentence: ?On Sept. 11, 2011, there?s going to be a bomb in the building,? according to the indictment. Mr. Martin would not say how investigators connected Mr. Correa to the crime but said the man had used a cellphone.

Charges include intentionally obstructing by threat of force the free exercise of religious beliefs and of using an instrument of interstate commerce to communicate a threat to destroy a building by means of an explosive device. The authorities said they were negotiating a surrender date with a lawyer for Mr. Correa.

The Justice Department has been investigating threats and violence against the Islamic community in Murfreesboro, which is about a half-hour southeast of Nashville, for almost two years. Leaders of the congregation have been building a 12,000-square-foot mosque and community center, hoping to open it before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins at the end of July.

Since the project began, the site has been repeatedly vandalized, construction equipment has been set on fire and residents have tried to block the project in court. The F.B.I. and other federal agencies are investigating a 2010 fire as a possible hate crime.

Opponents? arguments have ranged from assertions that it would increase traffic and damage water quality in the growing city of about 100,000 to concerns that the new center would serve as a cover for radical Muslims and Islamic law.

Public hearings about its construction in 2010 turned into a trial of the validity of Islam, with residents arguing that the center was part of a plot to replace the Constitution with Shariah law. A protest and counterprotest drew nearly 800 people, and a local Republican candidate for Congress tried to link the center to the Palestinian group Hamas.

Still, the building permit was granted. Opponents filed suit in state court contesting it, and were handed a victory this month when Chancellor Robert E. Corlew III ruled that the Rutherford County Planning Commission did not give sufficient notice of the hearing.

County officials have appealed the ruling and construction is continuing, but officials cannot issue the final permits so the center can be used.

Since the ruling, local Muslim leaders and the Council on American-Islamic Relations have been working with the Justice Department, which has filed a brief in support of the mosque in that case, and are watching the permitting process carefully.

Procrastination!! | Dorene Meyer

I am generally a pretty self-motivated person with loads of initiative ? except for a few things ? like blogs and websites and such. I don?t know why ? I?m not really a technophobe. It?s just something I don?t go ?whoopee? about quite yet.

So, here I am a couple of days before leaving my desk top and Internet connection for the summer and?yeah? it?s time.

It?s been a great spring, starting with our Northern Writers book launch at McNally Robinson in Winnipeg on March 26th, which got a mention in the Winnipeg Free Press.

In March, May and June, we had 3?more local Northern Writers Reading Series events there in Norway House, featuring books by Brenda Fontaine and Dana Coates??and David Williamson and yours truly: M. D. Meyer. We also had readings by various authors from our newest anthology: Northern Writers volume 3. These include Benjamin Paul who will be releasing a book of poetry this summer.

Benjamin is planning to sell his book at York Boat Days, which is the first week of August here in Norway House.?We are hoping to do a launch of Benjamin?s book next fall ? possibly October.

On June 13th, I received two awards from the Canadian Christian Writing Awards for my contribution to the anthology: A Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider,??and on June 14-16, I was faculty at the national writers? conference: Write Canada. ?

In a couple of days, I will be participating in the much anticipated graduation ceremony for the Educational Assistant students that I have been teaching for the past two years. That will be a joyous celebration! There are many other graduates who will also be participating from Norway House receiving their?Bachelor of Education, Early Childhood Education, and other certicates, diplomas and degrees.

And then it?s off to visit family and friends. I?ll see two of my five grandkids on July 7th, which I am VERY much looking forward to. Around the middle of the summer, we?re going to head down to Wyoming again ? I love it there! So peaceful up in the mountains ? I hope to get a bunch of writing done ? and final edits on Rachel?s Children, which I hope to launch in October.

Even though I?m not the greatest at keeping up with blog posts, I do try to reply to all the emails at dorene@dorenemeyer.com?so please drop me a line sometime!?

Have a great summer!!

Opinion: On Zizou, nostalgia and French mediocrity

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:23 p.m. ET June 23, 2012

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) -By cruel irony, the day upon which France vaunted its footballing mediocrity by losing to Spain at Euro 2012 also happened to be the 40th birthday of Zinedine Zidane.

Ah, Zizou! Even six years after the retirement of the midfielder with the magical feet, it's impossible not to miss him when his successors look so unworthy, with less collective verve than the son of Algerian immigrants sometimes seemed to have in his big toe.

More than any other Frenchman, with the exception perhaps of Michel Platini, Zidane fed the illusion that France is a great football power.

Has that ever seemed further from the truth than now, after this European Championship where the French tied with a wounded England, lost to Sweden and beat only the tournament co-host, Ukraine?

Yes, at the last World Cup. That was when the entire French team humiliated itself and its nation by going on strike, sitting on a bus, curtains drawn, refusing to train. In a rare moment of lucidity, Raymond Domenech, their then-coach who no one now misses, slammed that group as "a bunch of irresponsible, stupid brats" who became "the laughing stock of the world."

So true.

A French optimist - are there any left? - would argue that the good news is that that was the nadir. Collectively punished and then put back piece by piece by Domenech's classy successor, Laurent Blanc, France does at least now have team.

Just not a very good one.

It is not a disgrace to lose 2-0 to the world and defending European champion. But in this eastern industrial outpost of European football, where the air had a slight chemical whiff in the Donbass Arena that overlooks mines and slag heaps, Blanc brought a team as dangerous as a popgun against a Spanish armada of stars from Barcelona and Real Madrid. While Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli ensured that this was a fair fight, it was never an equal one.

Blanc knew the Spanish would be hard to hurt because, in his words, they so rarely share the football. That clever choreographed selfishness is both a form of attack and defense for the Spanish, because opponents can't score against them without the ball.

So Blanc set up his team to defend and hoped to rush Spain's goal when rare opportunities presented themselves. The lack of ambition inherent in his plan paid a compliment to Spanish superiority and spoke of French inferiority. It also never really worked. Within 15 minutes, Blanc had fished out of his smart suit trousers the piece of plastic he nibbles to death during a game. Again, one couldn't help but think that Zidane and Blanc would never have displayed such temerity when they were winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 together.

"You have to be so efficient against Spain, with so little of the ball," Blanc said. "We tried to spring forward from the back but we weren't fast enough in getting that first pass out ... And they are also very good."

The Donetsk crowd, likely expecting a thrilling exhibition of "Ole!" football, instead entertained itself with chants of "Ukraine! Ukraine!" and Mexican waves. Boris Becker, who used to give tennis crowds a better show when he was winning Wimbledon, was displeased, tweeting that the game was "boring."

In fact, it's fascinating to see how Spain stifles opponents by starving them of the ball. When Jordi Alba delivered the cross that Xabi Alonso headed in for Spain's first goal, it seemed like he had all the time in the world. The Spanish so rarely seem harassed. And when they are, goalkeeper Iker Casillas is there with his safe hands, spooning away Yohan Cabaye's first-half free kick that was headed for the top right hand corner of the Spanish goal.

So the Frenchman who most recently scored a competitive goal against Spain remains Zidane, in extra time of a 3-1 victory at the 2006 World Cup. Patrick Vieira scored the second French goal that day before Zizou's. And Vieira, too, celebrated his 36th birthday on Saturday. Strange. It was as though football's gods wanted to make us nostalgic with these quirky coincidences.

But an even more telling statistic is that France's 2-0 defeat of Ukraine at Euro 2012 was the first time that the French had won a match in the finals of a European Championship without either Michel Platini or Zidane in the team.

Astounding. Another way to read that is that without those megastars and the successes their eras brought, we'd think of France as a middling football country with delusions of grandeur - a bit like England.

In rebuilding the national squad that devoured itself and the stock of goodwill that Zidane's generation had accrued, Blanc has done good work. At his first press conference as coach in 2010, Blanc said the hard core of players he felt he could lean on was no larger than "a melon's pip."

It's perhaps melon-sized now. Striker Karim Benzema is an undeniable talent, even though the Real Madrid star leaves Euro 2012 without having scored. His partnership with winger Franck Ribery will produce goals down the road. But the French defense is full of holes like gruyere cheese.

And France's old demons of 2010 - born, essentially, of footballers' over-inflated egos - still haven't been put completely to rest. At these Euros, Blanc was forced to douse heated arguments in the French dressing room after they lost to Sweden - a defeat that bumped France into Saturday's quarterfinal against Spain, instead of a hoped-for easier encounter with the less daunting Italians.

In short, on his birthday, Zidane was missed more than ever.

Safeguard Financial Launches Managed Real Estate Investment ...

You are here: Home // Real Estate // Safeguard Financial Launches Managed Real Estate Investment Program

Lake Oswego, OR ( Kazor ) June 21, 2012 ? Safeguard Financial (www.IRA123.com) is proud to announce the launch of its Managed Real Estate Investment Program for Self Directed IRA & 401(k) plans.

In the world of IRAs and 401(k)s, real estate is known as an ?alternative investment? as opposed to what is commonly known as ?traditional investments? into stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Of the more than $4.2 trillion held in retirement funds, only a fraction is invested directly into real estate, or real estate related assets.

?Safeguard?s managed program offers retirement investor clients the option to own turnkey, income-producing real estate with tenants in place, or to participate in notes and loans secured by real estate. Investing is as simple and easy as investing in the stock market? according to Robert Hubbard, CEO & Sr. Investment Advisor at Safeguard Financial??and it?s more profitable?.

Geographic regions for investing have been chosen where rent-to-value ratios are highly favorable and employment is stable. Income-producing properties have been fully rehabbed to very high standards and a tenant and property management is in place?thus the term ?turn-key?.

Investment opportunities are offered by Certified Partners who were selected because of their proven track records, high ethical standards and superior customer service. Investments range from around $45,000 to $125,000 or more, and the targeted ROI is 9% to 12%.

Mr. Hubbard has been a prolific writer of articles related to the virtues of ?turn-key, cash flow? investing with real estate as opposed to ?speculative? investing into a stock market that he describes as being ?more like gambling in a casino in Las Vegas?. This analogy is made clear in his article: ?Retirement Investing: Complex or Simple?.

Long a proponent of cash flow real estate investing, in his two articles ?A Dose of Reality: Stocks vs Rental Property? and ?The Lost Decade of Retirement Investing?, Mr. Hubbard points out that from April 1999 to Sept 2011 the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced less than a 5% gain.

Therefore, a $100,000 investment would have produced a $5,000 gain. On the other hand, a $100,000 rental property during this same 12 year period, would have produced a net gain of $120,000. (No taxes are due when investing with retirement funds.)

?The numbers simply do not lie?if the data is compared on an apples to apples basis. Unfortunately, the Wizards of Wall Street never compare income-producing real estate to stocks. They ALWAYS compare the house you live in (which produces NO income) with investing in stocks. That?s deceptive and void of any truth?, observes Mr. Hubbard.
