This colourful view of the globular star cluster NGC 6362 was captured by the Wide Field Imager attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. This new picture, along with a new image of the central region from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, provide the best view of this little-known cluster ever obtained. Globular clusters are mainly composed of tens of thousands of very ancient stars, but they also contain some stars that look suspiciously young.

Globular star clusters are among the oldest objects in the Universe, and NGC 6362 cannot hide its age in this picture. The many yellowish stars in the cluster have already run through much of their lives and become red giant stars. But globular clusters are not static relics from the past -- some curious stellar activities are still going on in these dense star cities.

For instance, NGC 6362 is home to many blue stragglers -- old stars that really do succeed in passing for a younger age. All of the stars in a globular cluster formed from the same material at roughly the same time (typically, about 10 billion years ago for most globulars). Yet blue stragglers are bluer and more luminous -- and hence more massive -- than they should be after ten billion years of stellar evolution. Blue stars are hot and consume their fuel quickly, so if these stars had formed about ten billion years ago, then they should have fizzled out long ago. How did they survive?

Astronomers are keen to understand the secret of the youthful appearance of blue stragglers. Currently, there are two main theories: stars colliding and merging, and a transfer of material between two companion stars. The basic idea behind both of these options is that the stars were not born as big as we see them today, but that they received an injection of extra material at some point during their lifetimes and this then gave them a new lease of life.

Although less well known than some brighter globular clusters, NGC 6362 holds much that is of interest to astronomers and has been well studied over the years. It was selected as one of the 160 stellar fields for the Pre-FLAMES Survey -- a preliminary survey conducted between 1999 and 2002 using the 2.2-metre telescope at La Silla to find suitable stars for follow-up observations with the VLT's spectroscopic instrument FLAMES. The picture here comes from data collected as part of this survey.

The new image shows the entire cluster against a rich background of the carpet of stars in the Milky Way. The central parts of NGC 6362 have also been [studied in detail][1] by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble view shows a much smaller area of sky in much greater detail. The two views -- one wide-angle and one zoomed in -- complement each other perfectly.

This brilliant ball of stars lies in the southern constellation of Ara (The Altar). It can be easily seen in a small telescope. It was first spotted in 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop using a 22-centimetre telescope in Australia.

The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). ESO is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. It is supported by 15 countries: Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries. ESO also plays a leading role in promoting and organising cooperation in astronomical research. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory and two survey telescopes. VISTA works in the infrared and is the world's largest survey telescope and the VLT Survey Telescope is the largest telescope designed to exclusively survey the skies in visible light. ESO is the European partner of a revolutionary astronomical telescope ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. ESO is currently planning the 39-metre European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope, the E-ELT, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky".

Hurricane Sandy: A Personal Survival Kit | Therapy Soup

Hurricane Sandy Over Cuba (Nasa.gov)

We?re getting ready for the approaching hurricane, Sandy.

In my informal poll of coworkers and friends, I found that many of us view storms as kind of thrilling.

Of course, if you?ve ever been caught in a hurricane or another dangerous natural event, you?d probably disagree vehemently with those who find approaching storms ?exciting in a good way??you?d say they are frightening and deadly and exciting in a bad way.

And I?d have to agree. The potential loss of life and property is not something that I can view as other than tragic.

However, the sheer power of a storm is, for me, a spiritual experience. It?s also, for me, a reminder that that we are not in control, the Creator is.

For reasons beyond our ken, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, blizzards and other extreme nature events occur, no matter whether we want them to or not. They remind us that sometimes we just have to accept what occurs in our lives.

Should we try to overcome negative events? Sure, when possible. But sometimes, and in some cases, when facing personal hurricanes, storms of grief, painful losses, emotional swings, and so on, we have to learn to prepare ourselves, batten down the hatches, and wait out the storm.

Here?s a list of ?hurricane? preparations of the human kind:

1. Stock up your batteries and conserve energy.

You need physical and emotional energy to keep going. Energy generators which stock your ?batteries? include extra sleep, comforting and healthy foods, cutting back, when possible, on too many unnecessary or stressful activities, and taking care of your mental health in the way that works for you.

2. You?ll to light the darkness. Have some extra flashlights and a lantern ready and stock up on candles and matches.

Light is a common metaphor for inspiration and insight. Keep reading inspiring books, blogs, articles. (Avoid stuff that is dark or draining). Listen to uplifting music. Try to befriend inspiring people or at least read their biographies. Prayer and meditation are great light-bringers.

3. ?Stock up on bottled water.

In a natural crisis, water supplies can become tainted or can even be shut off. But, water is essential to life. Water purifies and hydrates, washes away the sticky stuff and deadly germs, it keeps us feeling fresh. There is more water on this planet than land. Water is the greater part of nature.

Immerse yourself in things that strengthen you, keep you feeling fresh. For me this includes walks in natural settings, running, and other outdoor activities. The great outdoors, or even a city park, heal the mind and soul.

4. Have some cash on hand.

You might need to fall back on some hard cash in emergencies. So be sure to have the currency you earned ready to use. Cash is a metaphor for healthy coping skills, behavioral skills, and all the interpersonal skills you?ve gained in therapy and in life. Spend them when you need them. Best of all, unlike money, the more you use your ?mental? cash, the more it multiplies and the more you have!

5. Lock your doors.

Sometimes, you have to lock your doors. Lock in the good friends, ?supportive and healthy relationships; but lock out the draining, negative ones.

UK recession over as economy grows 1 pct in Q3

(AP) ? Britain's economy emerged from its nine-month recession in the July to September quarter, when spending on the Olympics helped it grow by a bigger than expected 1 percent, according to official figures released Thursday.

The number published by the Office for National Statistics beat the market consensus forecast of 0.6 percent growth and will make the Bank of England less likely to approve a further round of economic stimulus in November, analysts say.

The ONS said the result was the strongest quarterly growth in five years, bringing economic output back to the same level of a year ago. It is a first estimate and is subject to revision.

Prime Minister David Cameron, in a message on Twitter, said there was still much to do "but these GDP figures show we are on the right track, and our economy is healing."

The statistics agency says the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games probably gave the economy a boost but it gave no estimate of the total impact.

It did say that sales of Olympic tickets that occurred in 2011 and earlier in 2012 ? the ones it statistically allocated to third-quarter economic output ? accounted for 0.2 points of the rise in GDP.

Increased activity by employment agencies, the entertainment sector and accommodation was likely boosted by the Olympics and Paralymics, the ONS said.

"As the Olympic effects unwind, it is still possible that the economy contracts again in the fourth quarter," said Vicky Redwood, chief UK economist at Capital Economics.

The dominant services sector, which shrank by 0.1 percent in the second quarter, led the rebound with 1.3 percent growth. Production industries including manufacturing grew by 1 percent but construction activity fell 2.5 percent, the ONS said.

Vikes can establish credibility vs Bucs

NEW YORK (AP) ? Considering the short list of surprisingly impressive teams in the NFL this season, the Minnesota Vikings haven't gotten much love. That could change Thursday night.

The Vikings weren't included in many TV plans after they went 3-13 last year and looked like a sure tail-ender in the rugged NFC North in 2012. Instead, they are 5-2, trailing the 5-1 Bears and ahead of ? yes, ahead of ? the Packers.

Yet their vast improvement hasn't moved the fan and media meter too much; even the Lions, who have been abysmal for much of the season and own the cellar in the division are getting more attention.

So when Minnesota (No. 10 in the AP Pro32) hosts Tampa Bay (No. 26) on the NFL Network showcase game, it's an opportunity for the 6 1/2-point favorite to establish some credibility across the nation.

"It feels good when you're under the radar, you're not really talked about, and then you start winning," star running back Adrian Peterson said. "So that's always good. You've just got to continue to keep the focus. That's what it comes down to.

"It feels good. I'm sure a lot of guys, including myself, will be excited to get out there. It's the only game playing, so people will be tuned in and ready to see some good football."

In Greg Schiano's first season as coach of the Bucs (2-4), the results have been inconsistent. They've produced on offense in half their games, been a dud with the ball in the other three. The defense ranks third in yardage against the run, mainly because Tampa Bay is next-to-last in pass defense.

"Again, we're sitting here, what are we, 2-4 now? And we're saying this old song and dance. That's the way it is," Schiano said. "Until we get it changed, until we find a way to change it, close but no cigar."

The Vikings will be lighting up on Thursday night.

Wine and fracking don't mix, say vineyard owners

The hillside vineyards of New York's Finger Lakes region make money producing fine Rieslings and inviting tourists to sip white wine by the water's edge. Now winery owners are worried about the prospect of a grittier kind of economic development: gas drilling.

Some grape growers fear that if shale gas drilling, or fracking, is allowed in this region of postcard-perfect hills and crystal-clear lakes, the muddy well sites and rumbling trucks will not only endanger the environment but threaten the Finger Lakes' reputation for pristine beauty.

In their view, wine does not pair well with drilling.

"If they allow hydro-fracking anywhere near us, tourism will be over and the industry will be done," said Art Hunt of Hunt Country Vineyards near Keuka Lake, N.Y.

Hunt owns one of the roughly 100 wineries that dot the gently sloping hills around the Finger Lakes, which has a grape-friendly micro-climate created by the deep, slender, hill-framed waters.

The upstate wine region about 200 miles northwest of New York City does not have the cachet of California's famous valleys, but it has garnered a global reputation over the past decade for its Rieslings. Many of the wineries are small operations and depend heavily on business from tourists who make their way from vineyard to vineyard along the scenic roads.

One prominent winery, Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars near Keuka Lake, averages 70,000 visitors a year. Dr. Frank was a World War II refugee from the Ukraine who brought the Finger Lakes into the modern era by successfully cultivating vinifera grapes in a region where winter temperatures commonly drop to 15 below zero.

His grandson Fred Frank worries the region's carefully tended reputation will be in danger if tourists who make the long trip up from the New York City area and elsewhere have to deal with traffic created by gas drilling.

"If they're in on traffic coming up a steep hill behind two or three tanker trucks crawling around at 5 mph, they're perhaps less likely to come back," Frank said.

The Finger Lakes sit atop the Utica shale formation and on the northern fringe of the Marcellus Shale formation, which is being tapped just across the state line in Pennsylvania through hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The process involves the injection of massive amounts of chemically treated water into wells and is denounced by many environmentalists as a danger to drinking water supplies.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration is reviewing the environmental and health effects of fracking and will decide whether it can go forward in New York. It is unclear how long the review will take.

Fracking is a polarizing issue that pits residents eager for new economic activity in a job-hungry region against those with environmental concerns. More than 110 upstate New York municipalities have passed moratoriums or outright bans on gas drilling.

The sweet spot for fracking in New York is south of many Finger Lakes wineries, and some of them would be protected by local bans. But winery operators say an entire lake could be polluted with one spill of chemical-laden water. They say that would create not only an environmental hazard, but a public relations nightmare.

"If the drilling does come to the Finger Lakes, what I can see happening in a heartbeat given a couple of accidents, all of the sudden the consumers are going to say, 'Are your vineyards near any wells?'" said Peter Saltonstall of King Ferry Winery by Cayuga Lake. "If people start thinking something is wrong with it, then we are sunk. That's something I stay up nights and worry about."

The advocacy group New Yorkers Against Fracking lists dozens of Finger Lakes wineries that want fracking banned.

A spokesman for the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York, a trade group, said fears of a forest of rigs and roads choked with trucks are unfounded. The buildup in New York is expected to be slow, wells will be spaced far apart, and water used in the process will be drawn from nearby ponds, lakes and streams when possible, instead of being brought in by truck, spokesman Jim Smith said.

"The industry and tourism in general have coexisted very well in New York, and our expectation is that it will continue to do so and that when we look back on this, the tourism industry will see this as a benefit to their business," Smith said.

Allied with the drilling companies are hundreds of residents looking forward to new jobs or big profits from leasing their land to drillers. Some farmers are among those who would welcome the economic jolt.

"The drilling operation is temporary and then all there is is a pad and pipe sticking out of the ground," said Gerald Urda, who grows organic vegetables and fruit, including grapes, southeast of the Finger Lakes in Windsor, N.Y. "I think the two can coexist. It's not going to be drilling forever, and it's not going to be the whole area at once."

Samsung Galaxy S III is the first MetroPCS handset to support Google Wallet

DNP Samsung Galaxy S III is MetroPCS' first handset to support Google Wallet

While the US wireless industry seems far away from finding a universal mobile payment system, T-Mobile's new BFF MetroPCS appears to have made its choice. Taking to its official Facebook page, the carrier announced on Monday that the Samsung Galaxy S III is its first handset to support Google Wallet. In choosing Google's mobile payment platform, MetroPCS joins two of its biggest competitors, Sprint and US Cellular. It should be noted that T-Mobile is deeply committed to Google's wireless payment competitor Isis, which recently became ready for public consumption. Once the two carriers exchange nuptials next year, it's possible that we could be looking at the wireless industry's first mobile payment Brady Bunch. However, looking back at T-Mobile's previous attempts at mobile matrimony, we won't be holding our breath waiting for this union to become official.

Texas is the No. 1 energy producer nationwide and ranks No. 6 for energy consumption per capita, a new analysis shows.

The state produces 15.3 percent of the nation?s energy, according to 2010 data the U.S. Energy Information Administration released this week. It also led the nation in U.S. marketed natural gas production, accounting for 28 percent in 2011, and in wind-powered generation capacity in 2010. It was the first state to reach 10,000 megawatts of wind capacity.

The EIA notes that Texas? 26 petroleum refineries, which had a capacity of more than 4.7 million barrels of crude oil, accounted for 27 percent of total U.S. refining capacity in 2011.

As of 2010, 49.2 percent of Texas? energy consumption goes to industrial uses, and 23.9 percent goes to transportation. The residential sector accounted for 14.4 percent, and commercial accounted for 12.6 percent.

Wyoming is the No. 2 energy producer, accounting for 14.1 percent of the nation?s energy production, but it ranks No. 1 for energy consumption per capita.

Tiny pores in graphene could give rise to membranes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Much has been made of graphene's exceptional qualities, from its ability to conduct heat and electricity better than any other material to its unparalleled strength: Worked into a composite material, graphene can repel bullets better than Kevlar. Previous research has also shown that pristine graphene -- a microscopic sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern -- is among the most impermeable materials ever discovered, making the substance ideal as a barrier film.

But the material may not be as impenetrable as scientists have thought. By engineering relatively large membranes from single sheets of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition, researchers from MIT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and elsewhere have found that the material bears intrinsic defects, or holes in its atom-sized armor. In experiments, the researchers found that small molecules like salts passed easily through a graphene membrane's tiny pores, while larger molecules were unable to penetrate.

The results, the researchers say, point not to a flaw in graphene, but to the possibility of promising applications, such as membranes that filter microscopic contaminants from water, or that separate specific types of molecules from biological samples.

"No one has looked for holes in graphene before," says Rohit Karnik, associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. "There's a lot of chemical methods that can be used to modify these pores, so it's a platform technology for a new class of membranes."

Karnik and his colleagues, including researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, have published their results in the journal ACS Nano.

Karnik worked with MIT graduate student Sean O'Hern to look for materials "that could lead to not just incremental changes, but substantial leaps in terms of the way membranes perform." In particular, the team cast around for materials with two key attributes, high flux and tunability: that is, membranes that quickly filter fluids, but are also easily tailored to let certain molecules through while trapping others. The group settled on graphene, in part because of its extremely thin structure and its strength: A sheet of graphene is as thin as a single atom, but strong enough to let high volumes of fluids through without shredding apart.

The team set out to engineer a membrane spanning 25 square millimeters -- a surface area that is large by graphene standards, holding about a quadrillion carbon atoms. They used graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition, borrowing on expertise from the research group of Jing Kong, the ITT Career Development Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. The team then developed techniques to transfer the graphene sheet to a polycarbonate substrate dotted with holes.

Once the researchers successfully transferred the graphene, they began to experiment with the resulting membrane, exposing it to flowing water containing molecules of varying sizes. They theorized that if graphene were indeed impermeable, the molecules would be blocked from flowing across. However, experiments showed otherwise, as researchers observed salts flowing through the membrane.

As another test, the team exposed a copper foil with graphene grown on it to a chemical agent that dissolves copper. Instead of protecting the metal, graphene let the agent through, corroding the underlying copper. To test the size of the pores within graphene, the group attempted to filter water with larger molecules. It appeared that there was a limit to the size of the pores, as larger molecules were unable to pass through the membrane.

As a final experiment, Karnik and O'Hern observed the actual holes in the graphene membrane, looking at the material through a high-powered electron microscope at ORNL in collaboration with Juan-Carlos Idrobo. They found that pores ranged in size from about 1 to 12 nanometers -- just wide enough to selectively let some small molecules through.

"Right now we know from this characterization how the graphene behaves, and what kind of intrinsic pores it has," Karnik says. "In some sense it's the first step to practically realizing graphene-based membranes."

Karnik adds that a near-term application for such membranes may include a portable sensor in which a layer of graphene "could shield the sensor from the environment," letting through only a molecule or contaminant of interest. Another use may be in drug delivery, with graphene, dotted with pores of a determined size, delivering therapies in a controlled release.

"We're right now in the process of transferring more graphene to different substrates and making holes of our own, making a viable membrane for water filtration," O'Hern says.

Scott Bunch, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado, says the group's results are the first demonstration that graphene bears defects. The membrane developed by the group "has the potential to be a revolutionary membrane" that separates particles at the molecular scale.

"The issue that now needs to be addressed is whether one can discriminate between smaller molecules," Bunch says. "Once this happens, graphene membranes will eventually live up to the truly remarkable properties that they promise."

Other researchers involved in the work are Cameron Stewart, Michael Boutilier, Sreekar Bhaviripudi, Sarit Das, Tahar Laoui and Muataz Atieh. This work was funded by the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals through the Center for Clean Water and Clean Energy at MIT and KFUPM, and was also supported by the ORNL ShaRE program.

Why a Wheat-Free Diet Improves Health and Body Fat | Her Fitness ...

Feeling bloated? You may want to try a wheat free diet.

You?ve probably heard about changing to a gluten-free or wheat free diet plan. But if you don?t suffer from a wheat allergy or from Celiac disease, you may wonder if there?s really any benefit to going wheat-free. After all, wheat and wheat-based products are so ingrained (pun intended) in the American diet that we often wonder if we really can give it up altogether.

Going wheat-free requires some work on your part?but that?s a good thing. If you?ve followed my blog for any length of time, you know that becoming educated about the food you eat is something I am passionate about. So if going wheat-free makes you stop and read your food labels, then you know I am all for it. But there are other, more tangible benefits to following a wheat-free diet plan. I?m going to list the top 5 reasons you should switch to a wheat-free diet below.

1. You May Have Wheat Intolerance? But You Don?t Know It

Studies show that Celiac disease is actually underdiagnosed in the United States. Some estimate that only 1 in 3000 people are diagnosed, when in reality, 1 in 250 suffer from the disease. So it may be worth your while to go off wheat for a period of time and see how you feel.

Does your digestion improve? Do you have more energy? If so, you may have wheat intolerance. A simple blood test can show the presence of antibodies in your bloodstream, and an intestinal biopsy can confirm Celiac disease. But simply eliminating wheat from your diet, and then seeing how you feel, is an easy self-test you can try on your own.

2. You May Feel Allergy Relief

If you suffer from many allergies, eliminating wheat from your diet can help ease your symptoms. If you have dry, itchy skin, or suffer from hives, then eliminating wheat can have a profoundly positive effect on how you feel.

3. You May Experience Digestive Relief

If you experience gas, bloating, and water retention, eliminating wheat from your eating plan can really help improve your digestion. Although we think that wheat is easy to digest, it?s actually quite hard on your intestines, and can cause sluggish digestion and even blockages. A wheat-free diet is much easier on your intestines than a diet that relies on wheat products.

4. A Wheat-Free Diet Can Help Keep Weight Gain at Bay

If you want to really jump start your weight loss, try keeping wheat out of your eating plan for a couple of weeks. You may be surprised at the result. Many of the refined carbs we eat without thinking (cookies, crackers, breads, pastas, and the like) are made with wheat. By eliminating wheat from your diet, you eliminate these products by default from your eating program, which can help you achieve your weight loss goals.

5. Your Joints Will Thank You

Studies show that gluten is often an instigator for joint pain in the body, as it weakens our bodies? natural defenses. If you suffer from joint pain or have a family history of arthritis, you can keep your joints feeling better?and thus stay more active?by eliminating gluten products from your eating program.

When eliminating wheat from your diet, be sure to read the labels of every food product you eat. Even seemingly innocent foods, like soy sauce, contain wheat. So if you are truly going gluten-free, you will need to make sure you read about everything you eat, before you consume it.

Want to get healthy, but don?t know where to begin? The Diet Solution Program can get you on the right path and keep you there.

The sense of 'antisense' RNA: Non-coding antisense RNA can be used to stimulate protein production

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? While studying Parkinson's disease, an international research group led by SISSA scientists in Trieste made a discovery which can improve industrial protein synthesis for therapeutic use. They managed to understand the use of RNA when it is not involved in the protein-coding process: the protein synthesis activity of coding genes can be enhanced, for example, by the activity of the non-coding one called "antisense."

To synthetize proteins, the DNA needs RNA molecules serving as short "transcriptions" of the genetic information. The set of all these RNA molecules is called "transcriptome." In the human transcriptome, along with around 25 thousand sequences of coding RNA (i.e. the sequences involved in the synthesis process), the same number of non-coding RNA sequences can be found. Some of these RNAs are called "antisense" because they are specular to sequences of coding RNA called "sense" (the pairing of a sense and an antisense RNA can be seen as a zip). A study published in the journal Nature, coordinated by a group of SISSA researchers in Trieste, has shown that this particular type of antisense RNA has a strengthening function on the coding activity of the proteins of the corresponding genes.

Very little used to be known of "long, non-codifying" RNA and this new research sheds light on some of these molecules. "We focused on one gene, Uchl1, whose mutations are linked to some hereditary types of Parkinson's disease," stated Stefano Gustincich, Professor at SISSA and coordinator of this research project. "We have seen that the non-coding antisense RNA matched to this gene is made up of two fragments, the real antisense fragment matching with the sense RNA that codifies the protein and the SineB2 sequence. The antisense fragment has the function of a "lock" into which the key of the coding RNA specific for that gene is inserted, while the other one has a stimulating function on protein synthesis."

If you change the antisense fragment with the analogous of another gene, the SineB2 sequence maintains its stimulating function on the new gene.

"This is important," explained Gustincich "because it means that the action of sineB2 could be used to stimulate protein production for therapeutic use -- any protein -- in industrial synthesis processes."

A coding RNA is a molecule that copies the information stored in small DNA fragments (genes). This information is then used to make the new protein. There are different types of non-coding RNA, e.g microRNA and small Interference RNA, known for having an inhibiting effect on the transcription of coding RNA.

Red Sox tab Farrell as next manager | MLB Baseball | Rock Hill ...

The Boston Red Sox announced on Sunday that John Farrell has been named to their vacant managerial post.

Farrell takes over for Bobby Valentine, who was fired after one season in which he led the Sox to a last-place finish and 69-93 record -- worst for the franchise in almost 50 years.

"We are thrilled to name John Farrell as our new manager," said Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. "John has been a major league pitcher, front office executive, coach, and manager. His broad set of experiences, and exceptional leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead our team. I have known him in various capacities throughout my career, and I hold him in the highest regard as a baseball man and as a person."

The 50-year-old Farrell led the Blue Jays to a 73-89 mark in 2012, good enough for fourth place in the AL East. He arrives in Boston thanks in part to a series of transactions, one of which was the swapping of shortstop Mike Aviles for pitcher David Carpenter.

The Red Sox, who also agreed to a three-year contract through the 2015 season with Farrell, received permission to talk to the then-Blue Jays skipper on Saturday night, and the deal to trade players was contingent upon the Sox reaching a deal to make Farrell their new manager.

Farrell, who ended his tenure in Toronto with a 154-180 record, was Boston's pitching coach from 2007 through 2010. Prior to that, he served as director of player development for the Cleveland Indians from 2001-06.

"I'm extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston," said Farrell. "I love this organization. It's a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us."

A native of New Jersey, Farrell pitched in parts of eight seasons from 1987-96 for the Indians, Angels and Tigers.
