Asus to Bundle 3D Motion Controller With Its Computers

Asus is set to bundle a 3D motion controller with select new computers, the Taiwanese electronics company announced Thursday.

Specifically, it is bringing Leap Motion's controller to consumers. The San Francisco-based company, which specializes in motion-sensing hardware and software, is best known for its controller. The device senses individual hand and finger movements so users can interact directly with their computers, according to Leap Motion's website. Once the Leap software is installed and the controller is plugged into a USB port, users get 8 cubic feet of "3D interaction space" in front of them.

"As OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) adopt 3D motion control technology, they're spurring a rapid evolution in computer interface innovations and helping free the full power and potential of computing for consumers." Michael Buckwald, Leap Motion's CEO and co-founder, said in a statement. "This historic partnership with Asus is an important step in building global adoption of the new computer paradigm Leap Motion's technology offers."

According to Leap Motion, its controller can track movements to 1/100th millimeter -- or smaller than the tip of a pin -- with no obvious lag time. The device has a 150-degree field of view, and tracks hands and fingers at 290 frames per second, the company added.

Asus said it will also bundle the device into high-end notebooks and All-in-One PCs "later this year." As "one of the first companies" to partner with Leap Motion, Asus may also be paving the way for other businesses to collaborate on human-computer interaction.

Leap Motion also announced Thursday that it closed a $30 million round of funding from existing investors.
